Eco-Responsibility: A Corporate Philosophy
On Thursday, April 22, in celebration of Earth Day, the first trees were planted as part of the greening project for Île-de-Hull at Wellington Park. Initiated by the Outaouais Regional Council for Environment and Sustainable Development (CREDDO) and supported by the City of Gatineau, the project plans to plant more than 1,000 trees, around 100 shrubs, and over 40 climbing plants by 2023. The initiative has the backing of several key stakeholders on Île-de-Hull, including real estate developer Brigil.
A Promising Project
A feasibility study for the greening of Île-de-Hull, conducted by CREDDO, determined that 1,705 trees could be planted on municipally owned lands. This would represent a 3% increase in the current canopy coverage. Brigil is proud to be a partner in this project, which aims to combat urban heat islands while bringing together key community stakeholders from diverse sectors.
Densifying Urban Centers
Environmental stewardship has always been a priority for Brigil. While Gilles Desjardins established it as a corporate philosophy 35 years ago, today his sons Jessy and Kevin are equally committed to the cause. Always on the lookout for new practices and trends, the family company continuously integrates innovative measures to prioritize the environment in its projects.
Brigil strongly believes in developing downtown areas to create communities with strong identities and economies while reducing residents’ ecological footprints. “We are pro-densification. We build in strategic locations close to all services to counter urban sprawl and reduce dependence on cars, which account for 22% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions linked to climate change,” explains Jessy Desjardins, Vice President, Development and Design at Brigil. “Living in the city produces up to three times less pollution, while also contributing positively to public transit networks.”
Brigil also fully supports Les Amis de la boucle, which proposes creating a railway loop to connect Ottawa’s and Gatineau’s rapid transit systems.
Demonstrating Leadership
Brigil aims to become a model for sustainable development and encourages everyone to help reduce their ecological impact to protect future generations. In developing each community, the company takes appropriate measures to contribute to environmental protection and preserve green spaces.
“Brigil promotes the integration and protection of local flora and fauna through concrete actions within the communities we build. As citizen builders, it is our duty to create complete living environments while respecting what nature offers us,” adds Mr. Desjardins.
The company has repeatedly shown that it can provide financial support for initiatives in health, culture, and education, and environmental causes are no exception. Organizations that have benefited from its support include the Fondation de la Forêt Boucher, the City of Gatineau’s Green Fund, and CREDDO.
